Cosmillion Ranks and Scoring: Tourist to One in a Galaxy

The Cosmillion ranks are six steps that score each answer: Tourist (10 points), Overthought (15), Cadet (30), Astronaut (60), Deep Space (85) and One in a Galaxy (100). A miss or timeout scores 0, and seven prompts make a maximum of 700. Every accepted answer on a prompt's list already has a rank, so this Cosmillion scoring guide uses real answers from the first 20 launches to show what lands where. For the rules, see how to play Cosmillion.

The six Cosmillion ranks and their points

Each rank is worth a fixed number of points, and the more unusual the answer, the higher the rank. Here is each one with examples from the boards.

RankPointsWhat lands hereExample
Tourist+10The first thing everyone saysAnt, Bee, Butterfly for an insect
Overthought+15Near-misses that sound cleverSpider, Worm for an insect
Cadet+30Known but not obviousBetween common and uncommon
Astronaut+60A real member of the category, a step off the main roadBody louse, Head louse, Carpet beetle
Deep Space+85Specialist knowledgeLac insect, Water scorpion
One in a Galaxy+100Obscure but validWebspinner, Rock crawler

All of these come from launch #20 on Cosmillion answers for November 4, where "Name an insect" accepted 359 answers. Overthought is the odd one out: it scores only 5 more than Tourist, and it holds answers that feel inventive but are slightly off.

How rare is One in a Galaxy?

One in a Galaxy is very rare: across launches #1 to #20, we counted 488 One in a Galaxy answers among 40,275 accepted ones, about 1.2 percent. That is 140 prompts with between 2 and 4 such answers each, an average of 3.5. Tourist is just as tight, at about 10 answers a prompt.

The middle of the ladder is where the answers are. Deep Space is the biggest rank at 40.3 percent of all accepted answers, then Astronaut at 30.8, Cadet at 17.9 and Overthought at 6.3. Tourist is 3.5. These figures are shares of the answer lists, not of players.

Examples of the top rank: Testaroli for "Name a type of pasta" on launch #1 (Cosmillion answers for October 16), Rollinia for a tropical fruit on launch #5, and Webspinner for an insect on launch #20. The full set is in the Cosmillion archive.

Cosmillion 700 and what a good score looks like

Cosmillion 700 is the perfect score, seven answers at 100 each, and with only about 3.5 top-rank answers per prompt it is a stretch even if you know the board. No official score distribution is published, so we cannot say what percentage of players reach any score.

A practical read of the maths: seven Tourist answers give 70, seven Astronaut answers give 420, and seven Deep Space answers give 595. If you land two or three Deep Space answers and the rest Astronaut, you are already around 450. Treat those as arithmetic, not as published benchmarks. Our Daily Chart titles run from Stargazer to The Whole Sky at 700.

How to climb the Cosmillion ranks

To climb the Cosmillion ranks, answer one category level below the obvious. Name a specific item, a regional one or a technical term, and avoid the word everyone knows. The Overthought trap is real: a clever-sounding answer that is not strictly in the category, like Spider for an insect, scores only 15.

The same ladder drives Cosmillion vs Krillion, where only the names change, and our list of games like Krillion has more to try. We explain who we are on about Cosmillion Online, and the basics are on what is Cosmillion.

Cosmillion Ranks FAQ

What are the Cosmillion ranks?

There are six, from lowest to highest: Tourist (+10), Overthought (+15), Cadet (+30), Astronaut (+60), Deep Space (+85) and One in a Galaxy (+100). A miss or timeout scores 0. The what is Cosmillion fact sheet lists them with the other rules.

What is the maximum Cosmillion score?

The maximum is 700: seven prompts, each answered with a One in a Galaxy answer worth 100. Because each prompt has only a few of those, a perfect 700 is extremely hard.

What is Overthought in Cosmillion?

Overthought is the second rank, worth 15 points. It often holds clever near-misses, such as Spider and Worm for "Name an insect" on launch #20, which sound rare but are not quite right.

What is a good Cosmillion score?

There is no published score distribution, so nobody can say what percentile a score is. As a rough guide, a chart of mostly Astronaut answers lands near 420, and each Deep Space or One in a Galaxy answer lifts it a lot from there.

How do Cosmillion ranks compare with the Daily Chart stars?

Our Daily Chart uses the same six-step ladder with star names from Dim Speck to Quasar. The table in this guide maps each official rank to its star.
